Friendsview Retirement Community is a not-for-profit Life Plan Community serving over 500 residents in Newberg, OR, with a mission to provide active residential living and quality continuing care to seniors in a Christ-centered community. Job Objective/ Summary: Assist older people who may be functionally, physically, and or socially challenged and need some assistance to remain independent, and/or to improve their overall quality of life; assist with activities of daily living in a manner that, at all times, fosters each clients’ independence, freedom of choice, privacy, dignity and total well-being; pass medications following instructions and with minimal supervision to ensure the highest standard of care at all times, in a manner which fosters each clients’ independence, freedom of choice, privacy, dignity and total well-being; provide person-centered care that protects clients’ rights including their right to say no and for maintaining the philosophy of Friendsview Health Care services.

Essential Functions:

  • Adheres to Friendsview’s policies and procedures; including those covering privacy and security in compliance with HIPAA regulations, and codes of conduct. . Maintains confidentiality and respects clients privacy at all times in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Gives medications, carries out treatments, and tests blood sugars as assigned/delegated by an RN, and in accordance with facility policies and procedures
  • Enters data accurately into electronic medical record system
  • Observes and reports changes in clients’ physical condition and cognitive/emotional status to Administrator or designee
  • Provides accurate documentation reflecting the care provided
  • Hand washing and infection control

 

  • In accordance with the client’s wishes and as directed in the client’s service plan, may provide assistance with:
  • Personal hygiene (shaving, dental hygiene, nail, hair, and foot care), Dressing, Bathing
  • Toileting which may include bowel or bladder training and incontinency assistance
  • Nutrition and hydration, including special diets, meal preparation and service
  • Vital signs and weights
  • Range of motion or other restorative procedures
  • The safe use of mobility devices (cane, walker, wheelchair)and gait belt including monitoring of safe transfer and ambulation techniques
  • Housekeeping tasks such as emptying trash, cleaning bathroom, bed making, bed changes and light cleaning as needed
  • Care of ADL devices such as eyeglasses and hearing aids
  • Uses down time productively by participating in the life of the community; sitting with clients, engaging in activities or preparing for future needs.

 

Caregivers working with clients who may be living with dementia or other mental health conditions are also responsible for the following:

  • In a manner that honors the person they were prior to memory loss or mental health condition, assists with ADL’s and individualized meaningful activities for each client
  • Redirects/re-approaches in response to behaviors that don’t benefit the well-being of the client or others, in ways described in the Memory Care Training Program, always protecting the clients’ self-respect and dignity
  • Uses finesse, knack, and other techniques learned in Memory Care Training class in communicating and interacting with clients who have dementia.

 

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Attends and participates in orientation, training, educational activities, staff meetings and in-services as required
  • Follows all safety rules and requirements, including proper client transfers and assists as per Resident Safe Handling Program requirements
  • Reports to Administrator or designee any suspected abuse, neglect and/or mistreatment of clients
  • Follows directions and instructions given by administrator or designee
  • Knows and follows Universal Precautions at all times
  • Responds to and acts appropriately in emergency or disaster situations
  • Monitors for environmental safety hazards
  • Records incidents, errors, or accidents
  • Assists with quality assurance programs when indicated
  • Assists in training new staff
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Demonstrates the ability and attitude to get along with clients, employees and supervisors.
  • Works cooperatively as a team member maintaining positive working relationships with staff in all departments
  • Meets Friendsview attendance and call-in standards including working your fair share of weekends and holidays
  • Meets Friendsview’s communication standards that support positive working relationships and demonstrate respect and courtesy at all times

 

Qualifications and Job Requirements:

  • Job Education, Licenses/Certifications, Knowledge & Experience:
    • Must be 18 years of age
    • Prefer previous caregiving experience
    • Successfully complete in-house training in medication administration
  • Supervising (direct reports and level of supervision): no supervision, may assist in training new staff
  • Decision Making: General supervision and a set of broadly understood position expectations. Decision-making with limited discretion, latitude, or negotiation. Assistance or resources are readily available.
  • Interpersonal Skills/Interactions: Communication and interpersonal skills are important, and must be well refined. Communicates regularly with employees, clients, family members, and medical professionals. At times, interactions with others may be complex, demanding or difficult.

  • Must demonstrate qualities of a strong servant leader and team player who helps those served grow as persons, become wiser, freer and more autonomous; and still provides a systematic, data-oriented perspective to business decisions.
  • Must be supportive of the Friendsview Retirement Community Values and philosophy of care.
  • English reading, writing skills and basic computer knowledge for accurate documentation
  • Verbal English language skills adequate for effective communication with clients and staff.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills.
  • Must be able to work with and communicate with the elderly.
  • Must be able to prioritize workload and adjust priorities on short notice.
  • Must be capable of maintaining confidentiality of information at all times.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check and, if applicable, fingerprinting.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must be able to pass the pre-employment reference checks.
  • Must be able to provide the official grade transcripts of the education level provided on the employment application.
  • Must be able to provide a copy of his/her own social security card for W-4 documentation.
  • Must be able to provide applicable documentation(s) for I-9 in order to establish identity and authorization to work in the US.
  • Must have valid driver’s license, personal automobile liability insurance, and acceptable driving record (if required to drive).
